These series (2003-2016) include paintings and drawings that reflect a whimsical world bursting with energetic gestures and layers of visual innuendo, such as disoriented architectural symbols—doorways, windows, stairs and elements of nature. Many viewers have commented that this body of work provokes Orwellian utopian and dystopian dialogues. The interplay between these fields has been on my mind a lot as we struggle to find a sense of homeostasis in a time that both frightens and intrigues. These pieces are poetic renderings that aim to touch upon a sense of place, purpose, and meaning in a world that is overstimulated and often philosophically absurd. There is always too much to take in, and so my abstracted gestures race about in hopes of constructing a map to uncover answers to the existential questions that, to some degree, confront us all.
